Webinar
Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is one of the most common functional gastrointestinal disorders, affecting an estimated 10–15% of the UK population. It is characterised by chronic abdominal discomfort, altered bowel habits, and a significant reduction in quality of life. Increasingly, probiotics are being considered as an adjunctive therapy, with growing evidence suggesting potential benefits for symptom control in certain patient groups.

This webinar will explore the latest evidence on the role of probiotics in IBS, including an overview of proposed mechanisms of action—such as:

·       Modulation of gut microbiota,

·       Improvement of epithelial barrier function,

·       Reduction of visceral hypersensitivity.

For pharmacists, probiotics present both opportunities and challenges in practice. The webinar will provide practical guidance on counselling patients, evaluating product claims, and managing expectations. Attention will be given to the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) guidance, as well as recent British Society of Gastroenterology (BSG) recommendations.

By the end of the session, pharmacists will be equipped with an evidence-based understanding of where probiotics may fit within IBS management, enabling them to support informed decision-making and improve patient care.
